I have the same problem with my 33 year old 71 foot crank up. I found that
the Prelub 6 product that K7LXC sells works well in conjunction with a soap
scrub brush.
Just make sure you don't damage the galvanizing. They aren't really rust
stains on the
tower legs just stains from the brake winch (or in my case the thrust
bearing) at the tower top.
