What follows is a response to all the posts on this topic, not just the
one to which this reply is attached.
C'mon guys, he's one of us. He put his story and pix up in good faith
and he gets tromped on by fellow hams ridiculing his "mistakes". I'm
not competent to judge whether or not they're mistakes but I do know
that that's no way to treat a fellow ham. I see plenty of ignorant
statements on various ham reflectors about stuff that I know a lot
about. I don't call the guy down. I either say nothing or I try to say
something that will alleviate his ignorance about this particular item.
Lots of guys haven't a clue about, for example, using a transistor to
interface a computer parallel port to the key jack, and I venture to say
that includes a number of Towertalkians. They may read about various
ways of doing it and try them until they find something that works but
never understand why one method works for them and others don't. If you
know this stuff, it's a trivial exercise. If you don't, it's a great
mystery.
Ignorance means that you don't know. Stupidity means that you don't
have the mental ability to enable you to know.
So, in the spirit of the above, may I suggest that when one of us comes
up with something that makes the rest of us cringe, that those who
respond do so in the same helpful manner that would make the person feel
good about being part of the fraternity and, to the extent possible,
grateful for advice kindly offered that any of us would like to receive
if we, in good faith, offered up something that revealed that we had our
head up our butt.
An old expression of the Golden Rule. "Do as you would be done by."
