Right you are!!!!

As a displaced New Mexican, I can assure you that the combination of
high desert altitude (even mid latitude spots in NM are 5000 ft +
elevation), thin atmosphere and bright sun combine to make
it the state with the highest incidence of skin cancer in the US.

The thicker atmosphere at sea level shields a significant amount
of UV in comparison.

Better living through sunscreen!
