Hi Steve,

Get in touch with NL7Z, Kevin, who lives in the Wasilla area. Kevin has my old callsign. He works 160 meters regularly. I'm sure he can give you some "on the ground advice". When I lived in KL7 (until a few months ago), I used a shunt loaded tower - worked fine. My longest distance QSO was with Brazil. Not bad, given the propagation from Alaska. Soil conductivity may surprise you, since Wasilla (at least a good part of it) is pretty heavily covered with "tundra" type soil, which retains moisture pretty well. The permafrost will also help you. Of course the standard "run as many radials as you can" advice applies.

Good luck in your new adventure!

Towertalkians,

I am soon moving to Wasilla, Alaska, which is about 45 miles outside of
Anchorage. The home we're buying is on a one acre lot that is approximately
160 by 300 feet. Given the poor conductivity in the soil up there, what are
my most effective choices for 160 meter antennas for a lot this size? Oh, I
may also have permission to use the empty 1 acre lot next door (it's
undeveloped and mostly woods) for stringing antenna or radial wire(s).

I would appreciate any thoughts, and I hope to see many of you on CW and SSB
from up there. Thanks and 73.
