Andy:

I've got a Fulton 1550 on a TriEx WT 51 50 ft. crakup, it doesn't have the rachet, but has a disc pad brake system. Its fairly quiet when you raise the tower, but lowering it is something else. That thing squeals like a banshee after the first couple of turns. Neighbors are used to it and don't get excited about it. Every so often when I'm lowering it before a storm, etc. my next door neighbor will tell us later he heard me lowering it before the storm and thought our 3 dogs were howling at something.

One more think against Fulton winch.
Try to raise crank up tower at night in the quiet neighborhood. That
ratcheting click resonate through the tower like machine gun and you can
hear it for a mile and you have more complaints then from TVI. Same goes
with my HAM IV rotor. I just hate that kerchung with a passion.

With the type of winches that use a ratchet lock (pawl) I have seen
things get out of hand (literally) and whack the operator hard enough to
break bones. Not to mention the sudden acceleration of the tower
and then the even more sudden deceleration.

Thats the reason I sayed that Fulton winch is not the best choice for

crank

up towers.
Rachet on mine broke for the very same reason as John mentioned above.
