I like using a powered capstan, really is the way to go, and you can use a
LONG line, whereas with a powered winch with a short cable, you might have
to snub off the line a bunch of times up a long tower....
Let me share with you an experience that was less than fun .. my brother and
I were putting a rather large FM broadcast array upon a tower, and to
facilitate the job, I rented a new CHAINSAW powered winch (not capstan) ...
seemed ideal! But .. the rental store had put a rather shoddy old chainsaw
head on the rig to power it, and it ran for *+&%# !
Darn near kilt me up on the tower, when it would sputter, then run amok ...
like the scenario of using a truck over bumpy ground to pull the rope. But
there was a time schedule, and there we were with what we had ..NOT a good
idea, and I don't recommend using a chainsaw winch to do the job. Now,
using the chainsaw powered CAPSTAN might just do the trick in fine fashion!
