Been there & done this calculation.  45G is cheaper than good mast,
and possibly lighter.  Certainly, ligher mast of equivalent strength
costs more than 45g sections.

Have had 60' of 46G with 20' of mast out the top, and a 26' vertical
above that.  Worked fine...including a folding section so I could work
on it without climbing.   After a year, I concluded that the tower was
lighter than the mast, or close to equal.  

Basically, unless you have a large stack to deal with, you're better off
with tower sections than extended masting.
