A little while ago I posted a message about 40m and
30m quarter wave verticals which were fairly close
together and fed over the same feedline. The 30m one
worked well but the 40m one was a disaster, being
easily beaten by a dipole at about 35'. I have finally
got round to moving the 40m vertical so that it is now
about 40' from the lake shore - it was previously
about 350' from the lake. (Quite a small lake by
Northern Ontario standards - about 1km wide and 15km
long.)

The vertical now beats the dipole hands down! Nothing
has changed except the position - the original radial
wires moved with it.

I am not sure if this is the same effect, but as part
of the move I changed an old AV3 from being on a 20'
pole 40' from the lake with elevated radials to being
right on the shore line with ground radials. My A4S at
50' still beats it comfortably, but the difference is
dramatically less.

Now I'm wondering if the domestic authority (and the
neighbours) would mind if I line up all my antennas
along the lake shore!
