Even tall, unguyed structures tend to fall in on themselves although they would form as close a knit pile as the guyed tower. The acelleration of a tall tower tipping over will cause the top half of so to bend back on itself. I'd sure hate to have the liability of a tower near final approach to any airport. A few years back a TV station installed a tower near HTL. Actually it was within the 5 mile radius of HTL and they didn't even have permit, nor had they gone through the paperwork with the FCC and FAA. I believe the top of the tower is near or over 900 AGL. BTW that tower is almost in the pattern for a public gras strip near the SW corner of Houghton Lake. You have to watch out for the guy wires when landing to the north and when you take off you have to go around the state police tower about a half mile off the end of the runway. The tower had been constructed, but there weren't even any lights on it yet. Not even any part way up. The tear down order had been written, but they pleaded and received a reprieve. Some installations decouple a bit and put a microwave linking antenna or something on there, but not often. _______________________________________________ See: http://www.mscomputer.com for "Self Supporting Towers", "Wireless Weather Stations", and lot's more.
