There's more than one reason for this.  W2GD had occasion to climb my tower 
this fall and discovered that some species of bee or hornet had taken up 
residence inside the mast -- he could hear them buzzing inside it when his 
head was close to it, while still feet down from the top.  Wish I'd thought 
of the tennis-ball solution then, because I didn't have a 2" plastic tubing 
cap handy.  Angering a nest of hornets while 100 feet in the air could lead 
to a really nasty experience.
