Hi Yuri.

I have been turning a TH7, D3W and 2el Cushcraft 40M beam with a Ham IV for 25 years.

I replaced the ring gear and added the super brake part. I have forgotten what it is called.

Also have a 6 second delay on the brake release that I added myself.

Never run the rotation to end stop.

Ham IV hasn't been off the tower in 15 years.

When it gives some sort of trouble I intend to take it down and re-work and put it back up unless something happens that is not replaceable.

Good luck.

73, George

I have done no business at all with Champion Radio (and therefore have
no reason to think either well or ill of the company), but that has
certainly been no impediment to my participation here.

Dennis please go here I have the article in a Acrobat PDF file
Because I like to antenna design so well

I did try to call the owner of qsl.net but no answer sent emails to let them
know they had a problem so someone must have finally read it.

A few minutes ago I went to QSL.NET to take a peak at the 80/40 beam
built by a VE6, after seeing a post about it... Now, Norton Internet
Security is informing me that QSL.NET (or someone claiming to be them)
is probing port address 80 on my computer trying to gain access...
What is interesting is that they got past my Netgear firewall and
Norton was forced to block them... Just a heads up to the gang...

Hi,
I lost breaks on my HAM IV for the 2nd time in 3 years.
All I have on it is TH6DXX only, so here's my question - is it too weak for
TH6? HyGain ad states it should endure such load.
Thanks.

Yup....I have had 6 el 15 meter beams on a 2 inch boom tear up the Ham
IV....upgrade! The T2X should work fine.

Rich also said he made many phone calls that were never returned. So if we accept his story at face value, he did his best. I don't know Rich or Steve. Maybe Rich didn't listen carefully enough to what Steve said he was selling, or maybe Steve didn't explain it well enough. But there is clearly a problem between them. It should remain between them, and they should resolve it like grown-ups. When there are disagreements between people on a business transaction, the standard way for good people to do that is to talk it through and meet in the middle if necessary. Perhaps that's what's needed here.

I also agree that to banish Rich from this list is childish and
arbitrary. If that reflects Steve's method of doing business, I
wouldn't want to do business with him either. And if I had sent the
stuff back by UPS once and it was refused, the vendor could order a
UPS pickup and pay for the return if he wanted it back.

I just finished erecting a hy Gain HY tower vertical which is 1/4 wave for 75 meters and this one is set up to work only on 75 meters. The only ground I have thus far is one ground rod. The hard work is still ahead. The Unit appears to work ok with resonance about where I want it but it hears about 1.5 s units below my slopers. The SWR is very low but I am sure it will go up with a good ground field in place. My questions are. (1) Will the addition of a good ground field have the same positive effects on receive that I should expect on the transmitted signal .
(2) Will the addition of a good ground field have any effect on the resonant frequency that it now has with only a single ground rod. Van W4GIW

Hi, Tod and TTers;

Tod presents 'an elegant solution." Furthermore, by optimizing the
length and diameter of the arm versus area of the vane, one can minimize
the wind loading on the tower and mast.

I recall that this aspect of antenna design and the calculations are
addressed in David Leeson's book, "Physical Design of Yagi Antennas."
I don't believe he includes calculations for any of the KT34 series, as
he does for several popular antennas, but he offers all you need to
calculate the wind induced torque.

My plan is to install a 'wind sail' slightly above the
antenna boom. This will be a single rectangular piece of
metal (probably aluminum; maybe galvanized sheet metal)
mounted on an arm that extends out from the mast. The arm
will be fastened to the mast using a clamp that allows the
length of the arm from mast to sheet metal to be varied.
This way I will be able to adjust the angle of the sheet
metal 'wind sail' relative to the antenna boom and also the
moment arm length.

Has anyone on the list attempted to wind torque balance a

KT34XA? I just went thru the numbers and my calculations

show

that the KT34XA should be a great weather vane. The

factory

specs show that the boom-to-mast connection is about 20"
inches behind the physical center of the boom. Presumeably

this is done to compensate for the fact that most of

weight

from the elements is concentrated towards the back-end of

I'm mising something here. Why would behavior OFF any
reflector shouldn't have anything to do with access to the
reflector?

I'm pretty sure Steve wouldn't do something like that unless
there was a huge misunderstanding.

Hello Van!

Congrats on your new 75 meter antenna. The HyTower is a real winner. I have been using HyTowers since 1977 and they work very well.
How well your new antenna works depends on several factors.
Ground radials (more is better) will provide significant improvements in gain performance.
The vertical will "hear" stations differently than your slopers as the two antennas have different vertical take off angle performance.
The VSWR may not go up much with a good ground system, but that depends on other factors as well.
Remember, a low VSWR does not always mean it is a good antenna.
The HyTower (like almost every antenna) obeys the law of reciprocity. What ever good/bad effects your ground system has on receive will also be the same on transmit as far as efficiency, gain, pattern, etc.

You can view 80 meter monoband HyTower installations at http://www.k3lr.com

73 and Good Luck!
