At New Mexico A&M, now New Mexico State, in Las Cruces  way
back in the late 1950's, we also drew 5 inch arcs from the  open
wire feedline during wind/dust storms.  I also had the  unfortunate
experience of having a discharge pass through me.  We  were
unable to transmit using that open wire line and some type  of
low dipole.
 
That station has a long history of activity, first as 5FY and  5FZ
(Dr. Robert Goddard of rocket fame), then W5GEM, and now  as
W5GB.
