Yes. Our use of the same symbol for earth and signal common has led 
to many serious misunderstandings. In our work on international 
standards with the Audio Engineering Society (AES), we've had to be 
very careful to avoid using the words "ground" and "earth" when we 
mean a connection to signal common, and be very clear about the 
meaning of every single word. 

In his excellent workshops on EMC, Henry Ott, WA2IRQ, whose book is 
considered the bible on EMC, talks about the hidden schematic 
lurking behind the ground symbol.
