I have a vertical on a large flat metal roof. Around the edge of the
building is a lightning rod system using pointed air terminals and dedicated
ground wires down the side of the building to ground rods.

I want to install some lightning suppressors on the coax..question is do I
bond them to the lightning rod ground or the utility ground? I assume
(checking on this) that at some point the lightning ground and the utility
ground are bonded together. Varying advice about this on the NEC and Fire
Code sites.

I also have to establish a station ground.

It seems like the utility ground system would be the place to bond the
suppressors for the vertical and also be the best place to get the station
ground.

I'm not sure I want direct bonding the lightning rod system.

Any thoughts?

Yes, I have some John.

First go to and thoroughly read the technical articles on the Polyphaser and
ICE (Industrial Communications Engineers) website. All your answers will be
found there.

You want your coax lightning arrestors located just outside the shack, just
before the coax enters the house.

If the service or this roof lightning ground rods are not near that point, then
drive a new rod and that is your SPG.

Then tie the lightning rod and the service rod to this SPG, routing this tie
wire outdoors. Then bond all your equipment grounds together and bring that
outside to the SPG.

I guess it would be your choice as to tie in the lightning system rod but your
SPG and the service and equipment grounds should all come together. Tie
together with #4 bare solid copper at minimum and Cadwelding the connections is
best.
