Hello,

I have a G5RV (102 foot version) and I am very happy with the
performance on 40 meters and 80 meters for my use. I have it mounted on
the side of my tower (the ladder line portion runs about 3 feet out from
the tower) and it is about 45 feet at the apex.

I am not able to use the built in tuner on my rig for 30 meters (Icom
746) but my external tuner tunes 30 meters. I can use the built-in
tuner on the IC-746 for 80, 40, 20, 17 and 15 meters. But I have a beam
for 20-10 so the G5RV is really mainly for 80, 40 and 30 at its present
configuration. This version of the G5RV is not designed for 160 meters.
I could maybe tie the coax braid and center together to make a long wire
input to an external tuner to make it possible for 160 meters but I also
use a remote coax switch at the base of the tower and that might
interfere with trying to do that for 160 meters?

So, my questions: (and appreciate any input):

1- What can I do for making it better on 30 meters?

2- If I add to the antenna equally on both ends (I have room to add
about 40 feet on both sides) would that bring it close enough to 160
that my tuner might do the job?

3- Part of #2 would be also adding ladder line? I could add about 40
feet of ladder line (it is now the standard 32 feet of ladder line)?
But if the antenna wires are lengthened does the ladder line necessarily
need to be longer also? I would prefer (easier) to leave it at 32 feet
as installed.

4- I could actually add a lot of wire (about 100 feet or more) to one
side of the G5RV but I am limited on the other side - if they are
lengthened does it need to be equal on both sides to be effective?

5- If I do anything to modify this G5RV will it likely suffer on 40
meters or 80 meters?

Thanks in advance for any input.
