OK, a little more information on this thread: 

One, when you take steel to the hot-dip galvanizers, the work is staged
through a series of vats. The first usually cleans dirt and oil off, the
second is an acid dip to remove rust, mill scale AND EXISTING
GALVANIZING. Only after another rinse or two does the work go in the
molten zinc. I would bet money that the aluminum rivets met their end in
the acid bath.

Second, aluminum is a not-uncommon additive to zinc in some galvanizing
operations. It makes for a very shiny hot-dip finish that only starts to
take on the normal galvanizing "splotchy" look after several months in
an outdoor environment.
