HFTA uses a very simple text format for the terrain files. It's simply
two spaced columns of numbers like this:
0 h0
d1 h1
d2 h2
d3 h3
etc, where d# is distance from the antenna and h# is the elevation. You
can choose (via the setup dialog box in HFTA) to use either feet or meters.
You can literally create a text file (even an arbitrary one if you want
to see the effects of different profiles) from scratch in any text
editor with the data in columns as shown above. After you save it as a
text file, rename it with a .PRO extension (i.e., filename.PRO). Put
that file in the same directory as HFTA and you are set to go.
So ... getting to your original question, I have several times used
Delorme 3-D TopoQuads for Arizona to generate a terrain profile,
manually pulled the distance and elevation figures off the plot, and set
up a text file. It's a bit tedious but it works fine, and I'm sure you
could do the same with TopoUSA since it will plot a terrain profile for
you as well.
