Rick is referring to a homebrew switch box I built using an
obsolete Matsushita (Panasonic) relay that was fast enough
for QSK.  I did some research into finding a currently available
replacement.  I looked at reed relays in the Mouser catalog
and there are many that switch in around a millisecond.  There
are known speed up circuits for relays that can give you another
factor of 2 or 3 in speed.
