The secret with steel wool is, rinse the area well after cleaning, and no
pieces will stay behind. Been using steel wool for years without such a
problem.

I like to use fine 400 grade wet and dry paper with kerosene as a lubricant.
WD40 works well too
Steel wool may leave pieces of steel embedded in the aluminum which will
rust later
