I'd encourage you to get on the air with whatever you can and enjoy the
contacts you can make.

All of us have antennas that are "less than perfection".

If your less-than-perfect 80 meter vertical makes a few local QSOs, enjoy
those QSOs. I have a crappe sloper (TM) for 160. I can get a couple of
multipliers in contests for Canada, continental US, Alaska, and Hawaii in
most contests. Real Soon Now I'll get a real antenna. But it will be less
than perfection then, too.

Actually the website is out of date. It is approximately 285 countries, and
7000 contacts. I believe you misread it. Not as many as those here.
However as I have been told here numerous times - anything less than
perfection is worthless. I use a Gap Titan for 20-10 because I am not
allowed anything else and this is relatively low maintenance. It IS a piece
of crap antenna.

The wire vertical I put up, and described earlier on this reflector - was
soundly trashed as being worthless. That the puny signal that would I put
out would be no more than a bother to the people that would try to work
me...that people would be going out of their way and doing me a service
trying to work me.

Dr MacKenzie,
Your website has some interesting facts. For someone who has 210 contacts
on 80M using a Gap Titan I don't believe you have an information base large
enough to offer the advice that you did. You may be able to speak to the
mechanical construction of the antenna, but signal wise you have a lot to
learn.

That was what I was told - that I would be wasting my time and time of
everyone else by putting up a simple vertical on 80M.
