Take off the nut that holds the winch handle. Leaving
the handle in place, replace the nut with a
"coupling nut". A coupling nut is used to connect
threaded rods together and will be sold in the
hardware store near the threaded rods. It is a
couple of inches long, hexagon shaped, and has
internal threads. Now you can turn the winch by
turning the coupling nut, as long as you only need
to go clockwise :-)
To keep the coupling nut from unscrewing when you
turn CCW, slip a box wrench over the coupling nut
and ty-rap it to the winch handle. To prepare the
wrench before installing it, first flatten it by
taking the bend out of the end you are going to
use by putting it in a vise and whacking it with
a hammer. Also grind off the unused end. Use the
cheapest, junkiest wrench both to save money and
because it will bend and grind down easier. Harbor
Freight wrenches highly recommended :-)
I use a Craftsman 1/2 inch 19.2 volt cordless drill,
with a 2 speed gearbox. Again, highly recommended.
About $129 with 2 batteries and a work light. Sears
sells a hex shaft to square shaft adapter so you can
attach a socket wrench that fits the coupling nut.
