    Well, there are different materials for ropes and  most of them are 
suitable for tower haul ropes. (However, I would draw the  line on old manila 
ropes.)
 
    Climbing ropes are pretty sophisticated due to  more exotic materials and 
much more testing and documentation. If you can  afford them, they make great 
haul ropes. The kernmantle (braid-on-braid)  construction is pretty abrasive 
resistant and offers years of reliable use.  Lots of yachting rope has the 
same construction but is more generic. My  personal haul rope is some of the 
nylon yachting rope and has over 700 days of  use on it with little wear. One 
day's use may consist of dozens of lifts so  it's obviously had thousands of 
cycles on it. 
 
    In choosing a rope you take into consideration  cost, elongation 
(stretch), material, suppleness, etc. They all have pluses  and minuses but as 
long as 
its rated for what you're doing, you should be good  to go.
