the trick for avoiding accidental running the batteries down is to get
a plug for an external power source that fits in the DC jack; just the
plug is all that's needed. That disables the internal battery supply
so even if you push it on by accident it won't come on until you pull
the DC p.s. plug out of the jack. Put it back in when you're done.
Makes it impossible to leave it on draining the batteries. Since I
don't carry mine around much except in summer, I leave the screws on
the back cover off which makes it easy to pop it off and check to make
sure nothing is leaking.
