As many do, I appreciate the T/T site and generally the topics here,
make no mistake. There are websites that claim to be ham radio sites, and
yet there are still ads posted for bicycles, Dale Earnhardt signature series
COBRA cb radios, and TIME SHARES swaps. Though no doubt designed to be 'ham
radio' they mean well, perhaps they are not monitored as TIGHTLY as T/T. No
one get's too exercised over it. But I'm afraid that we are losing ( if just
a little bit ) the compassion and the spirit that we all used to revere
about ham radio in general. If that sounds corny or phony then just delete
this message and wait for the next thread about your favorite yagi or tower
section. But my friends I dare say, even THIS site was created to offer
help and technical assistance, call it compassion, to other ops in need of
same. Announcements of a kind have often been posted here, new books or cds
for sale, and other items available, etc. and related to ham radio. Some
even spread the word about a silent key. So in my humble opinion I didn't
think that asking for that portion of the amateur community that subscribes
here to READ A PARAGRAPH, and perhaps do something for someone else other
than themselves is out of line. Was it such an imposition? And I'm sorry
for those of you who care to disagree, for a couple of reasons. A lot of
fuss about nothing frankly, but that is your right.
Right now I have to remind my wife not to ever let any of my ham friends
know when I have passed away, and certainly never mention that I might need
a 'lift' from them when my health is at serious risk. I'd hate for those
guys to catch any flack. My advice to you, stay well. -mike

Well, I'm glad Steve received some private words of support for his stance,
but I'm surprised there weren't more public ones. I for one did NOT think
that the original post about the ham who is ill was appropriate, the reason
being that I'm unwilling to let every one of the 1000+ subscribers to this
list decide for themselves which off-topic posts might be "important" enough
to fill up my mailbox. The only reason people post those messages on this
forum is because there is a large audience, a situation that likely would
not be the case if we couldn't rely on Steve to keep it from being a
free-for-all. Check out the activity level of the "TowerTalk" forum on eHam
as a point of reference.

Dave AB7E

Howdy --

A couple of topics recently drew criticism for a couple of reasons.
And coincidentally they both had to do with NON-TowerTalk topics.

For those of you who got upset because you felt I was a little quick
on the trigger-finger - my apologies. OTOH maybe we all would have been
better off if both of those posts had never entered TowerTalkLand.

This is an un-moderated list which means everything gets posted and I
see it when everyone else does (actually I see it later because I read the
digest). About the only thing I can do is to post something after the fact
to ask to have the offending subject dropped. Everyone mostly acts like
adults and we go along swimmingly most of the time. If you want this to go
to
a moderated list, let me know.

Yes, we all feel sorry for the guy that's ill and wish him the best
but where do you draw the line for appropriate and inappropriate TT topics?

First and foremost, we're here to talk about towers and HF antenna
construction projects. I'm not perfect and I make judgement calls. That's
the way
this reflector functions. It's gone on this way since 1996 and I think it
works pretty well AND dispenses valuable information to its members.

Thanks to those who dropped me notes of encouragement - I appreciate
them.

Cheers,
Steve K7LXC
