A lot of good suggestions, but let's beat this dead horse one more time.

Sunspots, listening, luck, etc are all valid but if you spend too much time
wondering whether or not something will work then the DX will come and go
without you ever getting a shot.  Mounting a vertical over a beam on a
modest tower is neither costly nor time consuming.  Stick it up there, test
it, and you will have your answer (and maybe some contacts).
