It all depends on your perspective.

The extra bandwidth can be an advantage when you operate both CW/digital and
phone, especially to Solid state radios. However if you run a tube type
linear or an antenna tuner, then you can usually compensate for the SWR
curve on the TH-6. I optimized my TH-6 for the low end of the phone band and
can work the full band on 20/15 and a most of the 10m band while maintaining
a respectable SWR.

You are correct on the gain. The TH-7 spec actually shows slightly less gain
and F/B ratio as the TH-6. Perhaps because the TH-7 is close spaced and uses
the same 24 ft boom as the TH-6. I think some benefits might be derived by
adding 55 inches to the center of the boom to accommodate the extra driven
element while maintaining the same reflector and director spacing to the
driven elements. I am considering doing this to my TH-6 when/if I have to
lower it for any reason.
