Actually any type connector needs the water intrusion protection. Some
types are inherently more resistant to water intrusion but none are totally
water proof.
I have the green and corroded parts from many N connectors to back that
up. Some were even sealed with the highly regarded heat shrink with glue
inside. I recently recycled a few N connectors that were sealed with the heat
shrink/glue combo and in places, some of them had no adhesion of the glue
inside. These connectors were placed into service maybe 10 or 12 years ago.
I suspect that the hot/cold cycles from summer through winter caused the
release of the glue.
Other connectors protected with the stretchy linerless rubber sealing tape
have had no seal failures over a similar time span.
We go have quite high humidity here in Texas and that no doubt makes for
problems like this. I have even seen water condensation inside the hollow
center conductor of 7/8" Heliax. When the water oozes by the screw in center
pin and collects around the connector center pin it does make for vswr
issues, especially at VHF/UHF.
The fix for this problem is wrapping the center pin of the connector
threads with Teflon plumbers tape before screwing it into the center conductor.
Works for 30 psi water pipes and it works for Heliax.
