Each yagi design has an optimum stacking distance. There is no universal
rule for stacking if you want the best performance.
Short boom yagis have lower gain and closer stacking distance. Long boom
yagis have more gain and larger stacking distance.
There are a number of computer programs that help in choosing the optimum
stacking distance and you would do well in acquiring one for your projects.
Stacked too closely, gain is lost. Stacked too wide, gain is not reduced
but the main lobe is narrowed and large grating lobes appear in the pattern.
In addition, you spend extra $$ for stacking frame materials needlessly.
