Hi Gang,
The last post on this thread was October 11, and if you followed along you
might have wondered what FINALLY happened. Well, I am happy to that the
rotor is back in the tower and everything works FB. The problem WAS the
motor itself. According to the techs at Yaesu, this was the most unlikely
failure mode. It happens so rarely that they do not normally stock the
motors here in the US. Mine came from JA in under 3 weeks and I assumed
that I would not have good WX to get things back together, but Saturday was
just perfect, 60F, overcast and light wind. And it had been dry enough that
my lawn wasn't a squishy mess too!
My advice if you have to perform a repair on one of these units is to put
index marks on EVERYTHING. The adjustment pots on the back of the control
box do not have enough play to get the calibration right unless you get it
assembled to the original condition. Yaesu emailed me the service manual
for the 800 and it does not contain this tidbit.
PRIZE AWARD: Jeff, W2FU was the first person to make the correct call as to
the nature of the problem.
