I had Skip the tower wizard replace my cables last fall on the HDX-5106 and he used a come-along to completely compress the spring. He then doubled up the cable and applied a crosby clamp so as to maintain no slack. This was done with the tower in the vertical position. He had a special clamp that could grip the cable in mid span. Hope this helps.
