I'll have to try that. I have lots of Acetone from the airplane project.
I must lead a sheltered life. As many years as I worked in maintenance
before going to college and another stint in industry after college, I
had never heard of using the Acetone/ATF mix for a penetrant. No matter
how long, there are always new things to learn or old ones that were
missed the first time around.
BTW I would caution anyone against using Acetone in enclosed spaces. I
had good face masks with particulate filters over activated charcoal and
they were effective. Without the proper filters it can be a life ending
experience.

Forget the ATF, use vegetable oil. And you don't need 50 percent
acetone, try 30. I followed the formula in the Drexel U lab experiment
and it worked great on a big hinge tower bolt/nut that was horribly
rusted.

Acetone is an obscenely flammable liquid so be extremely careful with it

The real bomb is a 50-50 mix of synthetic ATF + acetone. That
combo is
more than 4X better than WD-40.
PB blaster is a tiny bit better than WD-40..and that’s about it.
Don’t believe me...try it yourself. Acetone in tiny amounts, like
half a
pint, is available at
any paint store or home depot. Synthetic ATF or regular good quality
ATF
is available at any
auto supply parts store. Just shake up the mix real good.... just
prior
to using it.
