Is there a limit on how long of a cable you can use with SteppIR motors? I
recall one post years ago where someone was unable to get his to work with a
long run, but I don't recall the specifics.

So then what are the issues with distance from the shack?

Perhaps this is where hard-line becomes earns its keep?

Yes. And bigger conductors in the control cables for rotators (and for a
SteppIR, if you plan on one). The run from my shack to the top of my tower
is 350 ft of 7/8-in hard line, which I scrounged on the second hand market.
