Arnie, My first guess is that your son may have more trees at his QTH than you do. At those frequencies that matters much more than at HF. Also it sounds like a different Xcvr was used so don't rule out that his may have been on low power or that, if used, that it may not be a good one. Substitute another Xcvr and see if anything changes.... Good luck...
