I have a 45 ft. tilt-over tower of unknown manufacture (possibly homebrew)
that has been up for about 3 years. The tower itself weighs maybe 200 lbs
and supports a Mosely CL-33 tribander and a rotatable dipole for 12 and 17
meters. It was originally raised with the help of my neighbor and his
tractor; unfortunately that option is no longer available for me to get the
tower tilted down. The rotor is broken and there is other maintenance
needed, so I will have to use a winch to lay it over. My question is, how
hefty of a winch do I need? I have installed an old utility pole next to
the tower, and back guyed the pole for added stability. I plan to mount the
winch to the pole, run 1/4" wire rope through several eye bolts up the side
and across the top of the pole, then hook the end to an existing attachment
point 12 ft. up on the tower. I already have a Harbor Freight worm gear
drive winch that claims to be good for 2000 lbs. Should that be sufficient
or do I need to look for something more heavy duty? I don't plan on raising
and lowering the tower frequently, only when repairs or maintenance may be
needed.

Thanks and 73,
Vince K4JC
