I think you misunderstood. I have the directions from Cushcraft. If you put this antenna under a better radial field you need a matching system. One option is a shunt coil. I used the DXE example as they say it works on 160. Other matches are also options.

With just a few radials the match is great and the losses amazing I am sure LOL.

Oh yeah. SWR is sooo great when everything is lossy as all getout. More and more radials will show you where it's actually tuned, for sure.

As to tuning method, text on ma160v at DX Engineering says this:

"An adjustable stinger provides coverage on any 40 kHz segment across the 1.8-2.0 MHz band."

That would imply you're not supposed to change the coil, but change the stinger to move the center frequency, and the stinger should have enough range of adjustment to go anywhere 1.8-2 MHz.

The manual says radials should be notched into the ground.

Has anyone built their own coil for this antenna? With a lousy
radial field you don't need a match. I installed a few more
radials and now the swr has jumped and the bandwidth is tiny on
    this antenna.

DXE sells a matching coil that used 16 turns on 1.5 to 2 inch
tube. I have a bunch of solid copper ground wire to build my own.

I was just curious about how many turns people needed if anyone
    had tried this.
