The further the better.  If you put the 40 90 degrees off it will help.  Otherwise you will have some interaction on 15 at 10 ft. I have the same arrangement.

Look at turning the XM240 into a Moxon and get rid of their capacitor match.  The extra element really helps.

My Steppir had the 30/40m add-on and I was able to compare the two.  The 2 ele 
40m made the difference between copy and no copy. About 1-2 S Units better
