I know every one is going to have different experiences and luck with
towers depending on a dozen factors but for what it is worth I have
maintained 3-4 Universal towers (most 70') for over 30 years. Still have
several of the very original ones I bought used back 35 years ago.
I have not had any issues with hole egging or any build up of crud, dirt, bee's etc and never any water and ice build up. This is in FM18 and EN70. The only two failures I have had were when a tornado came within several hundred feet and snapped the short tower in half that held up a 2m Az-El EME array (that was overloaded) and the other was a very heavy ice coated HF yagi when we then had 60 MPH gusts. I made all of mine crank down from ground level.: https://w8bya.com/Gallery/HAM_RADIO/MISC/images/IMG_2890a.jpg https://w8bya.com/Gallery/HAM_RADIO/MISC/images/IMG_5099a.jpg Gedas, W8BYA Gallery at http://w8bya.com Light travels faster than sound.... I think they went that route so as not to make the tubing any thinner. I had one at my Aruba home along with a Rohn 55g tower, guess which one did not require frequent painting for corrosion maintenance? N9IWW is apparently looking for an aluminum Rohn 25. A 12" Universal tower is not very strong. The Universal Tower joints are a poor design, in my opinion. They upside down so water and dirt collect inside them and the supplied cheap zinc plated hardware will quickly disintegrate. Presently, I have 3 up ... a fourth goes up this year .. and plans include three more. Don't think cheap ... they aren't .. but, are all SELF-SUPPORTING, and no guy-wires are needed. ... nor recommended. 73 Don N8DEOn Sat, Feb 9, 2019, 9:33 AM Kevin Adam <n9iww at live.com wrote:Is there tower mfg aluminum tower like makes like Rohn 25 design I'm looking to install a tower aluminum 40 to 60 footer N9IWW_______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ TowerTalk mailing list TowerTalk@contesting.com http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/towertalk _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ TowerTalk mailing list TowerTalk@contesting.com http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/towertalk _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ TowerTalk mailing list TowerTalk@contesting.com http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/towertalk |
