I done it many times. As you suggest, pass the same gauge conductor through
the "unused" holes. Leave enough on one end so that if you wish to bond to
another connection point in the future, it can be done with another one-shot
or, -- silver-solder the new connection and use a pair of bronze split-bolt
connectors to easily align the conductors before soldering.
