<Indeed, my VNA showed exactly that change of R  when I did my climb to find 
the connection point for 160m.
<I omitted the shunt wire and feed the "50 Ohms point" directly against a 
single elevated sloping radial.

##  What you described, I  would  call a  quarter wave sloper.     Did you  
install radials at  the  base of  the  tower ?
