Thanks to all who responded to my questions about HFTA issues...both the actual
terrain readouts from K6TU and and also the resulting graphs produced by N6BV's
program.
The results produced from my personally taking elevations from Google Earth
seemed to be somewhat better than the originals, since the non-existing hills
that were taller than the tower location were gone. Not a huge difference, but
enough to make me happy about the new QTH
It never ceases to amaze me how much good info can be obtained from this
reflector. Thanks again! I just received my license from Belize . Now the
wait to get into the closed country to start building a house and a station.

I'm trying to find a way to import the *.13 gain data produced by
HFTASweep into Excel so I can display it as a polar plot for various
elevation angle cuts. I'm definitely no Excel guru, and haven't yet
figured out how to transform the tabular text from the *.13 file into a
usable form for import. Once I can get into cells, I can certainly get
it plotted. I'm sure someone has done this before. Any help would be
appreciated.

Hi, Randy.
If I understand your question correctly, you should be able to highlight
the text data, copy, it, and then paste it into Excel with the "text"
option selected.
If that doesn't work for you, send me the text data and I'll play with
it until I get it into Excel, and then I'll send the Excel file back to you.

Thanks to those who replied on and off list. It's just a "simple" matter
of importing the *.13 text data (which turns out to be organized in
fixed width fields) into Excel using the Data Import function. Then
there's a whole lot of reformatting to get the tabular formats put into
useful form. Since I'm not an Excel macro guy, that means doing some
simple copy and paste with formulas, followed by a WHOLE lot of manual
deletion of redundant rows of text. I'm making progress.

As an alternative to DIY Excel plotting, and if you are willing to
download and install the ITS HF Propagation package (
http://greg-hand.com/hfwin32.html ), that package has a utility
program called HFANT that can display azimuth and elevation patterns
from *.13 files. Example screen grabs:

Thanks for the tip, Dan. Unfortunately, I can't get the HFANT utility to
accept the data from the HFTASweep files. I get either complaints about
improper antenna name format or invalid character in field. I've done
considerable fooling around with the data files and can't figure out
what the problem is. I can copy the new data and paste it over the data
in one of the sample files and it gives me an error, but doesn't
directly say where it is. I haven't taken the time to check all 32,760
entries in the data file to see what (possibly non-printing) character
is causing the upset. It sure would be nice if I could find a spec for
the exact data table format, but no luck there looking through the
documentation. Guess I'm stuck with Excel.

I re-ran the sweeps again and this time the new data files work fine
with HFANT. Gawd, I love computers!
