I've used a SAL-30 for many years. It does an excellent job in minimal

Before you do anything, find and study W3LPL's talks to Contest University
on the topic of RX antenna systems. He lists a half-dozen or more very
different types, discussing their strengths and weaknesses.
Some are much more tolerant of surrounding objects (other conductors, trees,
etc.) than others; some won't work in that situation.
Search the internet for it. There is both a speech recording and slides.

I've had very good results using a pair of the Unified Microsystems
BevFlex-4X reversible beverages. Mine are installed in a heavily wooded
area. They're made from standard RG6Q coax and thus are much less fragile
than conventional wire beverages. Since they're bidirectional, you only need
two at right angles for essentially 360? coverage. They also have the
advantage of being able to locate the feedpoint anywhere along the length of
the antenna.

For small space:
Coax or magnetic loop - quiet but does not hear DX well
K9AY - quiet with some but not great directivity
DxEngineering 4 square - good directivity but seem to require switching off
on transmit. Pricey
HiZ / K7TJR sold by DXEngineering - 3,4, and 8 element versions. Less or
more pricey. Works pretty well and doesn't have to be switched off on
transmit.

In my small (1/3 acre) suburban lot's back yard, I had installed three
bidirectional EWE RX antennas. I was amazed at how well they worked, not so
much bringing up the signal levels but more for their ability to reduce
noise coming from off-boresight locations. That noise reduction brought the
S/N ratio up on most signals to the point that I could actually hear the DX.
I had a six-position coax switch

I could select one or the other EWE directions. The S/N differences were
discernable.
I also constructed a coax RX loop antenna which also showed a high
degree of directionality. Good luck with the project.

The directivity of a K9AY, if I understand the theory, drops as the skywave
angle increases. On the BCB I can completely null out one of two stations on
the same frequency as long as one of them is more or less in line with one
of the primary directions and the other is more than 90 degrees from that.

Interestingly enough, I have been pondering your statement during the early
morning hours as I try to go back to sleep.
You say "teaching" Amateur radio.
How many students in the school? Have they been canvassed to determine an
interest?
Is this a mandatory or elective class, with credits toward graduation?
What is the end goal of the class? Licenses? Ecomms? Technical training?
Will this class continue upon you moving on, either through retirement or a
better job prospect?
If you are teaching a class, why do you need equipment? Many learned about
Amateur Radio by purchasing and digesting? the Radio Amateur's Handbook, I
in 1955. No inet then. Equipment was built, antennas were wires. My wife
just took a Ham-Cram course. In at 0900, tested and graded by 1700.
Or, as I suspect, this is a potential ham club. Which would be, IMHO, great.
