what am I missing
If I had to guess, you are thinking like you will must attach your
lifting rope to one end of the mast, and therefore you need a gin pole
that is longer than your mast. But I am only guessing. If that is what
you are thinking, you are missing the fact that you don't have to lift
the mast from the end.
