Hi to all the Hams that answered my question on tuning 40 Meter 4square

Sorry that I haven't answered anyone who posted. Have been watching 4
grandkids for the last 2+ weeks and was not able to do much.

I appreciate all the replies. I did get all the elements tuned to the same
frequency (7030). Found that some of the segments elements had slid down
some, used SS sheet metal screws to keep that from happening in the future.
Also found that the feed wire and attachment has some corrosion issues, that
is fixed not.

I am not sure yet if the antenna is operating properly, still testing.

Again thanks all for your time and expertise.

Like Tim, K3LR - I have my 40m 4-Square elements (all wire-all
portions-hanging-in-the-woods) tuned to around 6.900MHz.

Seems to work just fine.

Hello all,

Rohn 25 used to have an option to tip over the tower NOT AT THE BASE but say
5 or 19 ft up by way of a hinged mount and a cantilever ...I am searching
for info on these (ANY ) And if the hazer option exists any longer..

Tim,

Time for a question. Regarding the dump power operation, are all the
elements connected to the 4-square box or is it done one element at a time?
Not that I have a 4-square but inquiring minds want to know. A 4-square is
in my future plans however.

Hello Skip;

I have lots of experience with tuning four squares for best performance.

All of the elements must be on the exact same frequency. This has to be done
by floating three elements while working on one. Floating means
disconnecting the coax (RG-11) at the vertical feedpoints.

Put a wattmeter on the output of the dummy load port (4 square box) and look
at the power going into the dump load. Very the frequency until you see the
minimum dump power. Then determine the "shift" you need to lengthen or
shorten the elements to bring the "dump load" power to minimum in the middle
of your desired "band of operation". With 100 watts into the box, you should
have less than a watt in the dump load at the lowest point.

On my 40 meter four square here at K3LR, My elements are tuned so the
minimum dump power is at 7.100 for best DX performance of 7.000 to 7.200
MHz. Operation above 7.200 is also just fine.

My elements are individually tuned (all on the same frequency) at 6.880 MHz
to give minimum dump power at 7.100 MHz. Your elements might be lower of
higher than mine, it depends on the diameter of your elements.

Lots of good information is here:

my tuning notes. My question is; what freq should I tune each element for?

My set up is: I have a RigExpert for an antenna analyzer, telescoping AL
elements, phasing lines cut for 7130 MHz, DX Engineering 4sq controller

Once all elements are tuned to the same freq, the resonant freq rises up.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ken:

Great question. The dump power measurements are done with all 4 verticals
(tuned at the exact same frequency) connected to the box.

having the manual , what diameter bolt is needed ?

I cannot help out wrt the OP but if I may I would like to share a
childhood experience/observation I had with that Rohn fold over tower
system.

I grew up in Detroit (not a nice part) and was lucky to have my
grandparents live several blocks away from us. When visiting them my
brothers and I would chance our lives and ride our bikes around looking
for things to do while out-riding the thugs that normally chased us.

During one outing I came across an amazing antenna system. At that time
(I was maybe 7 or 8) I knew zero about ham radio but was always
fascinated by this massive tower on a 1/8 acre city lot with a HUGE
antenna on top of it. Every once in a while I would catch the owner
folding over the tower to work on the antenna. It was fascinating
watching the structure slowly fold over and bring down the large 5
element full-sized 20m monobander to near ground level. I think it was
up around 70'-80'. It was also a real trick where and how Gene was able
to run guy wires to keep this beast up in the air on such a tiny lot.

A couple years later, after our family escaped Detroit during the riots
we moved out to the suburbs and I eventually a couple years later became
WN8BYA.? It was then after I had my first rig that I could tune around
the bands and listen to what everyone else (but me) was working.

Almost every morning I could hear Gene Ameriguan, K8CD (sk) working
VU2's long path giving out 5x8 & 5x9 reports and regardless of how loud
I cranked up the volume I never once heard any station he was working.?
Years later I drove to Gene's house and was shocked he and the tower
were still there.? I was warmly invited into his shack and I got to see
where all the magic took place. I even got to sit in the captain's chair
and got to tune the band !? He got a chuckle once I explained that I had
been "spying" on him for decades ever since I was a little punk. Being
older by then I got to inspect the tower and massive antennas and was
still in awe that that system was still rock solid doing it's job. Gene
said it had never once given him any issues and was able to survive
storms for many, many decades.

That setup left a very lasting impression on me and inspired me to
design my own fold over system for my 3 70' universal self-supporting
towers.? I can thank Gene and all those warm memories from almost 60
years earlier.
