Top loading a vertical with wire is a much better option than a loading
coil, especially if the coil is used at the feedpoint, but it's not always
feasible. The point was it's nice to have a premade loading coil source
although I am wondering how much of an issue the nickel plating is.

Just an alternate approach: I made my 160M "Tee" vertical with the tee top
long enough to resonate at around 1600 KHz. Then cancelled the inductive
reactance with a series air variable in a weatherproof box at the base.
