Now that I see all these post on the contesting forum I posted this to show
the pnwvhf guys that there is a discussion out there on rule changes again.
I ask that anyone on the reflector who knows what the changes are that are
likely to be done to post them on one of the well known relectors or web pages.
This is the only way to keep everyone informed of whats going on.
I remember sending suggestions to the committee. No one should hope that
thier suggestions will change the world but it shows that we are interested. I
am
an Arrl Member in the function to recieve qst magizine. Now with BPL and CC
and Rs I can see a need for lobbying though I think the Arrl may be
overplaying it a bit, like the NRA vs the Kennedys.
With that I should get flamed even though I own alot of guns.
To read the posts (quickly) it seems that some want to change the june
contest or eliminate it. I think that should be alarming, but we need some
facts
from that meeting to be sure.
Also can we pressure our section managers, division leaders and the like to
keep the contests? IF so how?
Also I know as a rover that for every log there is 3 or 4 more people who
participate in at least a limited way. The biggest reason they dont submit
logs
is the fact that they will not be published. ( I do the same with field day.)
This is a big mistake for the arrl on all the contests.
A simple web page could be created simulular to ours @ pnwvhf society. We
who are mostly geeks who like our statistics much in the same way a baseball
fan
follows fantasy baseball could make more of this and make it more interesting.
I don't have the beb skills but something could be created at the arrrl level
to do much of the same as our web-master does here.
Cumulative points from all the contests could be kept for certificates from
the arrl. With the exception of some dizzy rovers a million point certificate
would be an honorable long term goal.
Our club notes via the web page the longests qsos made per mode per
frequency. Also per type of prop. eme cant compete with tropo ect...
A reasonable station might hope to break one of these records during a
contest therefore he/she may participate more.
Finally, there is what do I win factor. The XXyl asks this all the time. I
did get a plauqe from the Boring Oregon ARC, so now I can show her that.
However one cant give a brand new radio to the winner since he wont need it if
he
just one hi hi. Therefore perhaps there is a way to get sponsership of the
contests by some radio dealers/ or manafactuerers to provide a radio via some
type of drawing. IE anyone who turns in a log with more than 10 contacts will
be
entered into the drawing for the radio. Uncle Buck who didnt want to send in
an entry because he knew his station wasnt so hot just might do so if he
thought he could win a decent station.
Bare with me here, I think its a win-win-win situation. People will submit
because 1/1000 odds are pretty good for the 35 cents to mail the entry. The
radio makers will help keep interest in these bands and increase sales, the
arrl
will see more participation to ensure band security. After all each dead
band is a step closer to the arrl going out of buisness.
Anyway that was long, so if you have some facts please post them, if you have
idea post them. Ranting about throwing our radios away will just end up with
thowing our radios away. If old Heston was a ham, we could use him as
president to let the fcc pull that cold dead mike out of his hands, but if we
dont
focus and organize the arrl will be ran by the planet of the apes.
