It's pretty hard to beat a Bird 43 with the appropriate power slug you need. 
They're pretty rugged and been around for a long (~50 yrs) time.

I know there are a lot of watt/swr meters out there for 1296 but can someone 
suggest a brand and model out there that will last along time and not break 
after a day or so of using.  thanks, chris, ka3zls.
