Just like any other microwave frequency equipment (or ANY HF-VHF-UHF
radio equipment for that matter), enhanced performance is based on
improvements to the total system gain and noise figure, such as using
gain antennas, amplifiers, etc.

Just because it is a consumer product meeting certain FCC rules for
unlicensed WIFI in that regard does not stipulate a licensed amateur
operator cannot modify by adding aftermarket enhancements.

Have you checked E-bay recently for all the 24db+ 802.11b antennas,
amps, and preamps available ?

Does this WiFi stuff meet the criteria of the minimum distance
requirement?

1.10. While no minimum distance is specified for contacts, equipment
should be capable of communications at a range of at least 1 km.
