Come on they are great amps! They work at rated power in a perfect load for
at least a 25% duty cycle :)
Seriously, I have ran one on the IRLP node for a while, trying to save the
finals in the transceiver. Some idiot (me) brought up the shuttle audio. It
went key down for about 2 minutes, key up for 3 seconds, and kept this up
for about 20 minutes or so.
When it started the amp ran about 100 watts out. When it was over it had
literally melted the faceplate all twisty-like and was putting out less than
half its rating. I could have fried food on the heat sink. Seriously.
I requested service, Mirage stated that this was not meant to be a full duty
cycle amp, and that I had voided the warranty with this installation.
I called tech support, and the tech stated, off the record, that he used
Henry amps. I laughed so loud I almost fell out of my chair.
Don't get me wrong. For the occasional HT user who does not want to invest
in another radio, they are OK. Given the price point, I think this is a
perfect use.
