1) Garmin eTrex has maidenhead output.  They were available cheaply
from WalMart a few years ago, not sure if they still are, though

2) Android app "GPStest" by Chartcross LTD, free and nice.

3) Not portable, but when researching sites on the computer,
http://qthlocator.free.fr/index.php is very nice. 4/6 digits grids
overlaid on google maps or satellite view.
