Keith - I agree with you, with the possible exception of when a mult is
available on the digital modes that is not available on an analog mode. This is
not an unusual situation these days as lots of times a rover will be the only
station on in a rare grid and will stay on the digital modes to give the
greatest number of stations a chance to work the rover. Dividing time up
between digital and analog modes is tough for a rover as there are more issues
to consider for the rover.

This is is not a uniquely digital issue, as even on analog modes, where
breaking off a run to chase a rare mult, or using multi radio (interlocked)
techniques on VHF/UHF can pay off in more points than are missed by temporarily
breaking off the run.

It is a lot harder to judge when to break off running and chase a mult on
VHF/UHF than on HF as the multi per QSO calculation is made more difficult by
the different QSO points for different bands. I don’t think any of the logging
programs calculate a QSO/mult equivalent by band.

But yeah, when the band is open, contesters, serious or not, should almost
always run on SSB or CW, and the fact that it is harder to do with most of the
casual ops on digital modes, is what frustrates serious contesters. It is a
tough problem, but I am not sure that giving up VHF/UHF contesting over it is
the correct solution in the long term. - Duffey KK6MC
